128 kbit/s Extension for Inmarsat Fleet F77
|
Inmarsat has unveiled a new Fleet F77 128 kbit/s capability that effectively doubles the data speed for seafarers using its flagship maritime service. The enhancement - a single, dedicated 128 kbit/s channel – will be available on existing Fleet F77 hardware, used by large vessels such as merchant ships and super yachts. The new service will make a significant improvement to vessels' operational efficiency by enabling data to be sent more quickly and cost effectively. A number of Inmarsat Partners are expected to offer the enhancement. Nera is the first manufacturer to offer a terminal upgrade solution, and Telenor is the first land earth station operator to announce a service in all four ocean regions. The service extension was announced at the SMM trade fair in Hamburg, Germany, on September 28, 2004. The extended service will provide users at sea with a single, integrated terminal platform delivering 128 kbit/s Mobile ISDN data and Mobile Packet Data Service (MPDS) capabilities, as well as voice and Group 3 and Group 4 fax services. It also meets the latest requirements of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) enabling pre-emption and prioritization of voice calls over low priority voice and data traffic. The extended service supporting 128 kbit/s Mobile ISDN will enable:
The 128 kbit/s service will be available from the beginning of 2005, using existing Fleet F77 hardware and requiring only a minor software upgrade. |
